The Bard Summerscape has announced its 2022 season dedicated to Rachmanioff.

Here is an overview of the opera and the series of concerts it will present.

The festival will featureDie Schweigsame Frauin a fast-paced new production by Christian Räth. The opera will feature Italian bass Andrea Silvestrelli, tenor David Portillo, soprano Jana McIntyre and baritone Edward Nelson. Leon Botstein conducts the American Symphony Orchestra and the Bard Festival Chorale.

Performance dates: July 22-31, 2022

The season will be devoted to the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, one of the last great representatives of Russian romanticism, which nevertheless embodied many contradictions. Through the lens of his life and career, “Rachmaninoff and His World” presents an illuminating series of concerts, pre-concert talks and panel discussions over the final two weekends of SummerScape.

From August 5 to 7, Weekend One retraces the composer’s complex journey between “Russia and modernity”, and from August 12 to 14, Weekend Two investigates his relationship with the “New Worlds” he conquered. There will be 12 concert programs spread over the two weekends.
