Virginia Opera announces 2022-23 season
The Virginia Opera has announced its 2022-23 season celebrating its 48th year of opera production.
Performances will take place at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, Va., the Carpenter Theater at the Dominion Energy Center in Richmond, Va., and the Center for the Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Orchestras for planned productions will include both the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony.
The 2022-2023 season opens with Richard Wagner “The Valkyrie.” The production comes after the company’s “Das Rheingold” produced at Topgolf. The production will be followed by Siegfried in 2023-2024 and will conclude with “Twilight of the Gods” (Götterdämmerung) to open its 50th anniversary season in 2024-2025.
Performance dates: October 1-16, 2022
At Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirate of Penzance” will be performed with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Performance dates: November 4-20, 2022
Virginia Beach-born composer Gregory Spears will be featured with the Commonwealth premiere of “Travel Companions”. The opera is part of the company’s renewed commitment to include contemporary works in its repertoire.

The season ends with Verdi’s “La Traviata” in a staging of the 2014-2015 season.
