CHICAGO (WLS) — Musicians from Ukraine and the Lyric Opera of Chicago have teamed up for a concert Saturday night to help with refugee relief efforts.

The “We Stand With Ukraine” concert featured works by some well-known Ukrainian composers.

The money raised at the event goes directly to providing humanitarian aid to children fleeing Ukraine at this time. So far, 31 Ukrainian children have arrived in Chicago and enrolled in St. Nicholas Cathedral School since the invasion began.

The Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra and musicians from Ukraine have teamed up in the best possible way.

“Music moves, comforts, soothes, warms and transcends all the evil that we are currently seeing,” said Orysia Cardoso, chairwoman of the board of directors of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art.

All this with the aim of helping the youngest of those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

“They come here with nothing. Maybe just a suitcase between two people. Some of the parents said, like, ‘I just threw a bunch of stuff in a suitcase and forgot about myself,'” Anna Cirilli said , director. at St. Nicholas Cathedral.

“It must touch each of us in our hearts. It is not only something that we think about, but it must move us,” Cardinal Blase Cupich added.

Cardinal Cupich and Mayor Lori Lightfoot were present, showing their support.

“Here in Chicago we have a large Ukrainian community and I think it’s important for all of us to take responsibility for defending democracy and freedom around the world,” Cardinal Cupich said.

The director of St. Nicholas Cathedral said he expects more Ukrainian students in the coming weeks and months.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be like if I get to a point where I have to start turning people down. It’s going to be really tough,” Cirilli said.

The benefit concert, organized by the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the Kyiv Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, is crucial in providing much-needed support.
