Eurovision: Kalush Orchestra joins The Rasmus for the remake of In The Shadows
The new single is a Ukrainian folk-influenced remake of The Rasmus’ 2003 hit In The Shadows, which was hugely successful and remains the Finnish band’s biggest hit. most popular single to date.
The release is Kalush Orchestra’s first since their Eurovision-winning hit Stefania, and the changes to the original song reflect Ukrainian sentiment during the ongoing conflict in their country.
In The Shadows was a major hit in Ukraine after its original release, and the two bands struck up a creative relationship after meeting in Turin, Italy earlier this year.
Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen previously told Metro.co.uk in an interview that his band had ‘made a very nice connection’ with the members of Kalush, recalling that they “had a little jam session with them in the streets of Turin”.
“And we have some very good ideas! Maybe we can do something in the future”, Laura – who admitted the group almost broken before entering Eurovision – teased at the time.
Now the new track is here, along with a black and white music video directed by Leonid Kolosovsky and produced with a mostly Ukrainian creative team, to authentically express what many Ukrainians are going through right now.
It features musicians and dancers in traditional Ukrainian attire, as well as rap verses in the native language, sung by Kalush Orchestra leader Oleg Psiuk.
“Probably all Ukrainians my age and a bit older remember this track from The Rasmus very well,” Oleg told PA.
“I was 17 when I first heard it and repeated it over and over.
“I never could have imagined that I would not only meet The Rasmus in person, but collaborate on a new version of this iconic song.”
He continued, “We were happy to reunite with The Rasmus and work with these cool musicians. We appreciate their music and their support for Ukraine and they are sincere and open people.
“We immediately decided to make a video for the song, so people could not only hear, but also see everything we want to convey to the world with our new work.”
Rasmus vocalist Lauri added: “We immediately loved the original sound of Kalush Orchestra – Ukrainian folk, vocals, flute, rap.
‘It was inspiring to hear how this song can be reborn like this! And the lyrics are unfortunately even more relevant to what is happening right now, in Ukraine and around the world.
While producing the video, Lauri added, “There was a feeling that everyone wanted to put in maximum effort for a common goal.”
In The Shadows Of Ukraine by Kalush Orchestra and The Rasmus is available now via Relentless Records.
Kalush Orchestra is also set to embark on its first North American tour from October 20 to November 9.
The band triumphed at the 2022 competition in Turin, but the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) later concluded the show could not be held safely in the war-torn country.
It has been decided that the UK will host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, with Sam Ryder coming second in the competition.
Liverpool was recently announced as the host city for the 2023 competition.
Meanwhile, The Rasmus are also on tour, with several UK dates in the coming weeks, including London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.
