Juan Felipe Molano conducts Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra’s first concert in Benaroya on 11/17

New Music Director Juan Felipe Molano will conduct the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) on November 17, 2019 at 3 p.m. in the Mark Taper Foundation Grand Auditorium at Benaroya Hall. Molano chose pieces from the Russian masters for his inaugural concert and reports that “the rehearsals went extraordinarily well. These young musicians have a mastery and a commitment that exceeds my expectations. They have taken on every challenge I throw at them and I look forward to sharing the experience with you. “
The compositions selected by Molano for the Russian Masters reflect the highest levels of integrity and complexity of this art form. Molano explains: “The inspiring energy of the young musician shines with Prince Igor’s Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin. And with Dmitry Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, the musicians take over the spirit of Russia in 1945 with a fascinating blend of challenge and beauty.
The virtuosity associated with Russian masters is also found in two of the winners of SYSO’s annual concerto competition. Hugo Bliss (Roosevelt High School) and Julin Cheung (Kellogg Middle School in Shoreline) take center stage on November 17; they play Mozart’s Horn Concerto No.3 in E flat, K. 447 – Mvt 1 and respectively play Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto pastoral pour flute – Mvt 1.
