Lise Davidsen and Christopher Maltman direct new CD / DVD releases
The first week of the year sees several high profile releases like Lise Davidsen’s latest album and three full recordings on DVD and CD.
Here’s a look at what’s new for this week.
“Juliana,” a chamber opera composed by Joseph Phibbs, with a libretto by Laurie Slade, is slated for release by Resonus Classics on all major streaming and CD platforms. The role of Juliana is sung by soprano Zoe Drummond, Kerstin being sung by mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones and Juan by baritone Felix Kemp. Nova Music Opera Ensemble is conducted by George Vass.
Decca Classics is releasing a new album by Norwegian artists Lise Davidsen and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. The new album features music by Edvard Grieg, including his song cycle, which is the focus of the album.
In a statement, Davidsen said, “Everyone in Norway knows this music. I am very aware of the conventions of how this “should” be done and by whom. This project was to listen to the music on our own terms, to try to find our Grieg sound. “
Dido and Aeneas
Henry Purcell’s was published by Naxos in a 2008 cover at the Opéra Comique in Paris. Directed by Deborah Warner and directed by William Christie, at the helm of her ensemble Les Arts Florissants, the production stars Swedish mezzo Malena Ernman as Dido, baritone Christopher Maltman as Aeneas, soprano Judith van Wanroij as Belinda and mezzo Hilary Summers as the witch. Actress Fiona Shaw is also featured.
L’Enigma di Léa
The Enigma di Lea by Catalan composer Benet Casablanca premiered at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in February 2019. Naxos is releasing a production featuring American mezzo-soprano Allison Cook, baritone José Antonio López and countertenor Xavier Sabata. Josep Pons conducts the Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
