Australian composer Brett Dean’s mesmerizing contemporary masterpiece ‘Hamlet’ is coming to the Met. Some of the greatest composers in the world have drawn inspiration from the works of Shakespeare. The Bard’s immortal tragedy is among the theater’s most gripping psychological portraits, and the incorporation of the music – including tour de force vocal writing, towering choral forces, and powerful orchestral sweep – only compounds the tension of this classic tale.

Brett Dean is one of today’s most eminent composers, with a body of work encompassing numerous orchestral, choral, chamber and vocal works, as well as two operas and concertos for a variety of solo instruments. To express the power, complexity and ambivalence of Shakespeare’s unequaled text, Dean employs a musical language that is by turns brash, dissonant, oddly beautiful and humorous. In addition to a full opera orchestra, the score calls for a large percussion section, electronic instruments and unusual sound effects, and a half-choir of eight singers in the orchestra pit to act as a kind sound echo from the scene. stock. Voice writing presents great challenges for all the main actors, not more so than the main character.

The 2022-23 season of Met Opera from the Goddard Center will continue during the renovation of the Bradshaw Event Center at 25 West Broadway in Ardmore. Feature film performances and dates will be announced this summer.

The Goddard Center is located at 401 1st Ave. SW to Ardmore. For more information, please call the business office at (580) 226-0909 or visit our website at goddardcenter.org.
