Opera Huntsville to Present “Bluebeard’s Castle” – The Madison Record
HUNTSVILLE – Opera Huntsville is currently in rehearsal for an adventurous show that will take place during Halloween week.
‘Bluebeard’s Castle’ is a fully staged production of Bela Bartok’s brilliant one-act opera. Opera Huntsville will present performances October 28-30 at the Von Braun Center Playhouse, 700 Monroe St. SW in Huntsville.
Music director Daniel Krenz conducts a chamber orchestra. Rebekah Alexander and David Ian Lee take on directing responsibilities for this psychological thriller. Huntsville favorite Terrence Brown will portray Bluebeard and mezzo Thea Lobo will make her Alabama debut as Judith.
Other members of the art team are David Kravitz (Bluebeard cover); Shannon Rose (Judith cover); Shan Kennedy, assistant musical director; and Sierra Hammond, production manager. Kenisha Hill Phillips is Executive Director of the Huntsville Opera.
Recognized as a masterpiece, “Bluebeard’s Castle” follows Judith as she explores the mysterious castle despite disturbing rumors. Judith insists that all doors be open to let light into the forbidden interior. Bluebeard refuses and says that the private parts of the castle are not meant to be explored by others.
While exploring the castle, Judith encounters imminent danger. The first door opens into a torture chamber, stained with blood. The second gate has a weapons warehouse. The third reveals a reservoir of wealth. At Bluebeard’s insistence, Judith finds a secret garden behind the fourth. Behind the fifth door is a window opening onto the vast kingdom of Bluebeard.
