Opera Southwest will perform concerts to celebrate 2022
Opera Southwest brings together four of its favorite singers to celebrate the New Years at the Albuquerque Journal Theater at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Friday, December 31.
The musicians will perform excerpts from works by Giuseppe Verdi, Charles Gounod, Johann Strauss II and more.
The two-hour shows will take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. A champagne evening will follow at La Fonda del Bosque at 9:00 p.m. Selected members of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony will perform alongside the Opera Southwest Orchestra.
The musicians performed last year’s concert remotely due to the pandemic.
“This is the first time that we have our full orchestra; we usually use a smaller orchestra, ”said conductor Anthony Barrese.
Barrese described the music as a mixture of opera and operetta.
The musicians will perform Verdi’s overture to “La Forza del destino” and two pieces from “Romeo and Juliet” by Gounod.
Listeners will also be able to hear songs from Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus”, as well as excerpts from “Don Pasquale” by Gaetano Donizetti and “Carmen” by Georges Bizet.
The singers include tenor Christopher Bozeka, who has performed in both Albuquerque and the Metropolitan Opera. He sang the role of Nadir in the US premiere of Opera Southwest in Giovanni Bootsini’s “Ali Baba” in 2019.
New to Albuquerque, soprano Hanna Brammer will play Juliette, a role she sang at the Sarasota Opera House.
Timothy Mix last sang here as Amonasro in the production of “Aida” and sang the title role in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”. He also performed in Santa Fe and San Francisco.
The mezzo-soprano Laurel Semerdjian interpreted here the role of Morgiana in “Ali Baba” in 2019. She will return to Opéra Sud-Ouest in the role of Geneviève in “Pelléas et Mélisande” by Claude Debussy in 2022.
The opera requires proof of vaccination and the wearing of masks during performances. He will also accept a negative rapid test the same day.
