Nominations for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards have arrived and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been recognized twice by the Recording Academy. The PSO’s recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 received nominations for Best Engineering Album and Best Orchestral Performance in the Classical category.

The recording was conducted by Manfred Honeck and also includes the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

Soloists Christina Landshamer, Jennifer Johnson Cano, Werner Güra and Shenyang are on the performance of Beethoven’s PSO No. 9. Boston-based Soundmirror’s Mark Donahue designed the recording.

“This recording was released on the occasion of our 125th anniversary and is a reminder that music is a great source of joy and healing, and a hopeful future,” said Melia Tourangeau, President and CEO of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra following the announcement of the nominations.

The Beethoven recording No. 9 is PSO’s sixth to receive at least one Grammy nomination. PSO have received 12 nominations and won two awards in the past six years.

The Grammys used a different procedure to select the nominees this year. A popular voting format replaced the controversial “secret committees” that had selected candidates in recent years. Change has come shortly after the 2020 prices announcement.

The awards will be announced on Monday, January 31, 2022 in Los Angeles.
