Queensland Symphony Orchestra to mark 10 years of Symphony Under Stars at Gladstone

On Friday September 2, 3,000 people will gather for the Symphony Under the Stars Community Concert at the GPC Marina Stage in Gladstone, celebrating 10 years of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) making the journey north and sharing the joy of music.
Fifty-seven QSO musicians will travel to Gladstone for the 10th anniversary concert; one of QSO’s greatest journeys in its 75th anniversary year.
Symphony Under the Stars is supported by Australia Pacific LNG operated by ConocoPhillips, Gladstone Regional Council, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Center and Gladstone Port Corporation. The highly anticipated visit is part of the Gladstone Enrichment through Music (GEM) initiative, which since its inception in 2012 has welcomed a total audience of 41,000 people.
This year’s concert will be conducted by popular conductor and entertainer Guy Noble and will explore a fantastic program of well-known symphonic favorites from film and opera, as well as large-scale pieces showcasing all the instruments of the orchestra.
“Symphony Under the Stars will be an unbroken epic through music that has thrilled audiences for decades, including excerpts from some of the most famous pieces ever written, all in one concert,” he said. .
“For beginners in classical music who think they just want to hear famous pieces, this concert is for you. For anyone who recognizes a piece when they hear it but can’t remember its exact name, this concert is also for you. And for the rest of you who know and love these favorites, you’ll want to be there too. See you on September 2, for a concert for adults.
Students from the Gladstone Prodigy program will perform alongside QSO musicians at this must-see concert. Students will benefit from workshop opportunities with QSO musicians before the show for their community.
Five students from Tannum Sands State High School will perform including Simone Henry (flute), Dwight Ramsay (clarinet), Logan Nutley (oboe), Isaac Rankin (double bass) and Hannah Rankin (cello), as well as Caleb Dawe (trumpet) from Chanel College, Joshua Mapleson (tuba) from Gladstone State High School and Lauren Porteous (trombone) from Tooloola State High School.
Local instrumental music teachers and facilitators will also benefit from professional development opportunities with QSO musicians and bandleader Guy Noble as part of the three-day Central Queensland Instrumental Music Workshop.
ConocoPhillips Head of Communities and Sustainability Rob Gibb said there couldn’t be a better time to share this iconic event with the Gladstone community.
“The Gladstone community, like all others, is dealing with the economic and social impacts of a global pandemic which has limited live events for most of this year. Having the opportunity to present this event responsibly with Gladstone Regional Council, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Center and Gladstone Ports Corporation Limited is a significant way to lift the spirits of the community during a very difficult year,” said he declared.
This event is FREE and no reservation is required.
