The Poway Symphony Orchestra continues its 2018-19 season with a concert featuring nationally renowned pianist Frederick Moyer on Sunday, March 17.

The concert will take place at 4 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

The show will include performances of “Hungarian March” by Hector Berlioz, “Overture-Fantasy of Romeo and Juliet” by Tchaikovsky and “Piano Concerto No. 2” by Rachmaninoff.

Moyer will perform as a soloist in the Rachmaninoff concerto, which is one of the most popular concertos in the piano repertoire, according to a press release.

He has been a concert pianist for almost 30 years and has performed in 43 countries, including Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom. He has performed as a soloist with major orchestras from Cleveland, Philadelphia, Minnesota, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Houston, Boston, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia, among others.

Moyer has also performed with chamber ensembles at the Marlboro Music Festival and Tanglewood, working with baritone Benjamin Luxon, violinist Salvatore Accardo, cellist Nancy Green and the Muir String Quartet.

“This is the first time that the Poway Symphony Orchestra has presented a soloist of this caliber,” said John LoPiccolo, Music Director and Conductor. “We are delighted to be playing this wonderful concerto with someone as unique as Frederick Moyer.”

Bo Matthys, President of the Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation, said the orchestra was able to present Moyer thanks to a generous sponsor who has pledged to provide the necessary funds. “For this we are extremely grateful,” said Matthys.

The orchestra started in 2004 with Ulli Reiner as first violin. Reiner, according to the orchestra’s website, “defers the vision of forming a symphony orchestra that would meet a need for classical music performances in the community and for musicians interested in playing in a full orchestra.”

Composed of amateur and professional community musicians, the orchestra gives three concerts per season and often has a guest soloist. It is organized by the Poway Unified School District Adult School.

The orchestra is always on the lookout for interested musicians to join and is particularly interested in strengthening its string section. Rehearsals take place on Mondays from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Those interested in joining the orchestra can contact LoPiccolo at 208-757-1980. More information about the orchestra can be found at powaysymphonyorchestra.org.

The orchestra’s 2018-19 season finale concert will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. It will feature guest soloists The Benefic Piano Trio and will include interpretations of two works by Beethoven, “Symphony No. 7 in A major” and “Triple Concerto in C major.”

Tickets for the March 17 concert cost $ 20 general admission, $ 17 for seniors, and $ 12 for students 12 and over. Children under 12 are free at the ticket office only. Tickets are available at the box office, by calling 858-748-0505 or online at powaycenter.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and one hour before the concert.
