The Strand Theater will host Opera Night: The Ship’s Captain on May 19

HUDSON FALLS – May 19, The Strand Theater in Hudson Falls will host “Opera night! The captain of the ship.” Parodic opera in one act by Carl Blum features music by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and others reworked into the story of two orphaned nieces and a ship’s captain’s quest for marriage. For this event, the original German libretto from 1817 has been updated and translated by Byron Nilsson, who is also the director. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The pit orchestra consists of flute, violin, guitar and piano. The three singers, Yvonne Trobe, soprano; Joëlle Lachance, mezzo-soprano; Vince Gover, baritone, are veterans of the Ohio Light Opera, and Trobe and Lachance are also former young artists of the Glimmerglass Festival. Mr. Gover is also a composer. His pandemic operetta in one act Lend me a roll has been viewed thousands of times on Youtube. The singers will be accompanied by Musicians from Ma’alwyck.
Ma’alwyck’s musicians have long been associated with the revival of opera. In 2009, the ensemble recreated George Washington’s favorite opera The poor soldier and paired it with Glimmerglass Opera to present a series of sold-out performances that garnered national attention. The ensemble is in residence at the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site and has been featured on NPR, PBS and other broadcast media.
