Vancouver Opera House is giving a FREE outdoor concert this summer
One of Metro Vancouver’s prettiest parks will be transformed into a majestic concert hall for a free outdoor show this summer.
Vancouver Opera and the City of Burnaby have announced the premiere Opera in the park Sunday, July 17 at Festival Lawn in Deer Lake Park.
The family event is called Opera in the Movies and will be a lyrical journey through the music of Hollywood hits.
“We are thrilled to present the first Opera in the Park with the City of Burnaby,” Tom Wright, general manager of Vancouver Opera, said in a statement. “This free summer concert is our first partnership with the City of Burnaby. It’s also a party!
“After many years of navigating through Covid restrictions, this is an opportunity for us to once again engage directly with our audience. Our concert on July 17 will feature an event-filled day for music lovers of all ages with plenty of activities for families. We look forward to more events like this in the future.

The party starts at 1 p.m. with pre-show activities for the whole family. There will be an instrument petting zoo where attendees can learn about the different musical instruments that make up an orchestra.
There will also be balloon spins, face painting, a photo wall, stilt walkers, surprise traveling performances and a chance to win prizes.
Opera in the Movies begins at 7:30 p.m. and will include instantly recognizable selections of films ranging from The Godfather, The simpsons and Impossible mission.
Vancouver Opera Music Director Emeritus Jonathan Darlington and Chorus Director Tina Chang will conduct the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Chorus and Principal Singers.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot with their own blankets and lawn chairs. Outdoor food is permitted and there will be a number of food trucks on site.
Parking in the area is limited, so be sure to allow extra time and arrive well in advance if you decide to drive. Alternative modes of transport are also recommended.
