The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music’s BlueScope Youth Orchestra kick off their regional tour of western New South Wales to celebrate Youth Week with a special concert called ‘BlueScope Goes to the Movies’.

Parkes and Manildra audiences have the opportunity to hear popular tunes from some of cinema’s most famous films: Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, La La Land, James Bond, Beauty and the Beast, The Pink Panther , The Avengers, and a John Williams Trilogy featuring Stars Wars, Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Arc.

BlueScope Orchestra director and longtime member Tanya Phillips says the members are excited to be on the road, not least because they support Youth Week.

“The music we’ve selected for this tour is taken from some of the most famous films ever released and appeals to a wide audience, young and old,” Tanya said.

“A tour during Youth Week offers the opportunity to show younger regional audiences, who may not be familiar with classical orchestras, the wide range of music an orchestra can play and the essential role that orchestras still play in film making.

“We always like to tour during Youth Week.

“This year we’re really embracing it with a special session in Parkes where young people living in the area can meet the orchestra, learn to play instruments and get a taste of what it’s like to be in an orchestra. and be part of a Conservatorium.”

The orchestra is also looking forward to the concert in Manildra where it will perform for the very first time in the historic AMUSU Theatre, a 1930s Art Deco theater and museum featuring many original architectural elements, posters and memorabilia from yesteryear. .

“Given our film theme for this tour, we thought it was fitting to perform at one of NSW’s oldest heritage listed theaters which still shows films weekly,” Tanya said.

There is also a special concert for the little ones: Baby PROMS at the Pavilion from 10am on Mondays.

This is designed for children aged five and under, introducing them to musical instruments and getting them to clap, skip and lip-buzz as if they are also playing wind instruments.
